One of the most joyous past-times for comic books fans is playing the game, "Who's Directing Alan Moore's Watchmen Now?" For a while, Terry Gilliam was attached. Now, it appears that Dawn of the Dead director Zach Snyder will be helming the project.
"Watchmen", which tells the story of the last remaining superheroes and the events surrounding the mysterious murder of one of their own, was one of the first superhero comic books to present itself as serious literature and popularized the more adult-oriented "graphic novel" format. It is also the only graphic novel to have won a Hugo Award and to appear on Time magazine's list of 100 best novels from 1923 to present.
Of course, DC Comics, publisher of Watchmen is owned by AOL Time Warner, publishers of the list. That being said, Watchmen is considered to be the novel that changed our modern day conceptions of comic books; let's hope that Mr. Snyder doesn't fuck it up too much and cast Ben Affleck as Rorschach.
I'll agree that the VAST majority of comic movies get screwed up. But I think it will be much easier to hold true to this one.
It's very difficult to be true to most comics in a movie due to the fact that most storylines are so long and involve so many complex characters with lots of back-story. You have to squeeze as much as you can into a 2 hour movie. Changes have to be made to do that.
But with this...it's a stand-alone story. If they screw it up, it's a crime.

wouldn't it be more satisfying as a TV miniseries rather than a single film?
That was what Terry Gilliam wanted to do with it. Or rather, it was offered to him, and he said that was the only woy ot would work.
I think most adaptations ought to be handled as miniseries rather than movies. But then again, I think art is more valuable than money, so what do I know?
I once thought if one can film the LOTR movies and not toally fuck them up, anything is possible. this is not the case for Watchmen. it just doenst NEED to happen.

make watchmen three 3 hour movies and i would scream to the heavens in glee!!!
Watchmen is totally unfilmable as a 2 hour film. There is just too much that goes on in the story. Hell, you could do a friggin' movie based on the issue featuring Rorschach.
I wish thi were good new but it will probably turn into garbage like most films based on books which to much going on...hello DUNE ANYONE?? ....THEY ONLY HALF GOT IT RIGHT THE SECOND TIME AROUND.,
ok one major point here...its being brought up by the same guy that fucked up remakeing one of the greatest horror movies of all time. I have no high hopes that the Watchmen will not be defaced any worse.
In order to do justice to the entire story, "Watchmen" would need to be a multiple part project. The best venue for such an undertraking would be a cable channel such as HBO or Showtime, simply because the "made for TV" tag automatically waters down storyline. Key elements of the story would get censored out and we would be left with some godawful miniseries.
On the other hand, two 3 hour movies in the vein of LOTR or "Kill Bill" may be up to the task.
Mickey Rourke as Rorschach=pefect.
They could do Watchmen well as a single three-hour movie if they take out some backstory and the Tales of the Black Freighter parts, which I bet they will in any event. Basically, give it the LotR treatment. Just because the could do it well IMO though, I don't expect they actually will, especially with this news that Snyder will be directing. I suppose I'll check out 300 before I make any final predictions, but I'm not hopeful.

yeah but. Jackson had to fight long and hard to get them to make 3 movies. New line wanted the tale in 1 movie only. Him shooting all 3 back to back helped it alot.
please please i really hope Zach dosen't pick it up (as much as i loved dawn of the dead) if only terry gilliam would pick it up again as a 3odd hour film it would be fuking amazing, but unfortunately i doubt he will... makes my feet sad that does
