i'm a whiskey soda, gin and tonic kind of girl. I'm going to a fancy shmancy cocktail party tonight for my friend's 30th birthday party, and I don't want to be "that guy" ordering tanqueray on the rocks.

So what's your favorite fancy drink?

I'm a big fan of anything involving juice. Rum or vodka and any kind of juice is tasty, colorful, and impossible to mess up. Also, you get to be a pirate because it is technically grog. ARRR!!!

If you want to take it one step further, get a rum runner. It varies, but it's generally something like orange juice, pineapple juice, malibu rum, regular rum, and grenadine. it's tasty and oh so fancy. biggrin

Don't drinks generally get simpler at fancier parties?

Rye Manhattan with bitters, or a sazerac or a dark and stormy.

You can never go wrong with a vodka and tonic. Absolut and tonic is appropriate in any and all situations. Grey Goose if you want to go classier.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as you're not ordering something that requires fruit and an umbrella, fuck it.

It's all about knowing the fancy names of simple drinks, e.g.:

Cuba Libre: rum & coke with lime
Dark & Stormy: rum & ginger beer with lime
Screwdriver: vodka & orange juice
Salty Dog: vodka & grapefruit juice

There's always the original cocktail, the Old Fashioned, if you're looking for some whiskey. And gin & tonics are a totally acceptable level of class.

All of you fail. The trick is to get drunk before the party even starts. That way you won't have to worry about what to drink.
