they've been putting out a bunch of mult-disc collector's sets for a number of his movies through the Criterion Collection recently. it kills me to not be able to go out and grab them all up, but none more so than Shichinin no Samurai.

A buddy of mine who's a Criterion fiend is the one that introduced me to Kurosawa. He gave me a box set w/Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, and The Hidden Fortress a few Xmases ago.
It's also how I got into Criterion as a whole. The releases can be pricey, but it's a lot of movies you won't find elsewhere. It's how I saw John Woo's The Killer for the first time.

And the scene on the playground in the snow from Ikiru is heartbreaking.
And Dreams is amazing.
we actually watched Kagemusha as a part of my East Asian Civ class when we got to the 1500s in Japan section. first Kurosawa film i saw. got me hooked instantly.

I loved how he said in interviews that Kagemusha was a dress rehearsal for Ran. Talk about epic.

i think that's the most impressive dress rehearsal in cinema history.
I'm a huge fan of The Bad Sleep Well, personally. His samurai flicks are classics, of course, but I'm one of the rare ones who finds the Sergio Leone adaptations more enjoyable.
My favorite of his has always been Ikiru, which I guess says something about me, since that's probably the least Kurosawa-esque of Kurosawa's films - I'm a bit more of an Ozu man just personally.
Still, I appreciate the hell out of most of Kurosawa's movies. Rashomon gets better and better with age, and I've got a real soft spot for the noir-ishness of High and Low.Throne of Blood - his version of Macbeth - is surely one of the most fascinating adaptations of Shakespeare ever put on screen.
