It's a good "introductory" film for the people like my Mother--uneducated religious sheep. She's been a "believer" her entire life, if only because she hasn't been taught otherwise. The film opened her eyes to the doubts she's felt all along, and gave her a reason to question the intents of religion.

Good for your Mom for watching this with an open mind. I applaud that. If there were more people like her, this world would be a much better place.

I finally saw this.

Have to say I was very disappointed. He had some good points here and there that a lot of people probably just don't know despite the fact that they should (e.g. Mithras, Krishna, Horus). He did show some really crazy people, but I felt that point was drowned out by the fact that there were some seriously obvious editing to take out many of their side arguments (although a few, like that congressman, painted themself silly), and Maher being the normal Anti-theist just trying to turn his opponents words on their head without giving much, if any, thought to their made argument.

Also, what was with the book ends about how religion will destroy the world? Minus the small part about the violence of the Muslim religion, there was absolutely nothing in there that showed religion as being a destructive force. Maybe a silly force, perhaps to the point of ignorant, but not destructive...not from his movie.

Oh, an the belief that a series of B52's over 50million years ago flew over and dropped hydrogen bombs into a volcanoes that then did some crazy thing to make all life a culmination of "Thetans" is quite a bit more crazy than the biological possibility, although incredibly unlikely, circumstance of the Virgin Birth.

it was all right...more like a cinematic version of 'Real Time'

Did he spread the love, or was it mostly Christianity getting beat on?

No, he talked about other religions, but it was mainly Christianity and the denominations thereof.

The best part was when he was standing in front of the Vatican talking w/a priest who basically said, "Yeah, fuck the Church."

Yeah, I totally wanted to hang out with that priest and get drunk.

Me, too. He was easily my favorite part of the movie.

The rest of it was pretty "meh," in my opinion. There were funny parts and more worthwhile parts, but overall I think I'm just a little tired of Bill Maher's religion thing at this point. I'm not a religious person myself, but there's only so much of him going, "Look at how ridiculous people are, with their wacky beliefs and shit! When will people become enlightened and evolved like me and believe exactly what I do/don't?" that I can take without getting yawny. Oh, you think religion is dumb, Bill Maher? And that you're right and everyone else is fantastically wrong, and how can everyone be so stupid even though your infinite smartness is there to enlighten them? Really? I wasn't aware that you felt that way; good thing you made an entire movie to repeat those points for anyone who missed them. *zzzzz*

i thought it was really sad to see all these people talking about how there is actual "scientific proof" of jesus and other biblical occurrences. even smart people like the scientist. i cant think of really any other way to put it. i mean its funny to a point, don't get me wrong i definitely laughed, but i think i was laughing because its just so silly. and too see all those clips of bush saying words like, "crusade" when referring to the war on terror, wow what an idiot.

I find them both to be equally crazy.

All of the non-God elements of the Christ story actually exist: baby, virgin, shepherds, groovy wise kings, oxen and lambs etc.

The CoS story contains: Xenu, the Galactic Council (or whatever it's called) starships from billions of years ago that happen to look just like DC-10s, special clam creatures that humans evolved from, "psychiatrists" running mind control experiments that led to the modern cinema, and execution of souls via volcano.

But you're right, they're totally equally crazy. I think it's more helpful to say they're more or less equally likely, but from our frame of reference I really don't get the argument that "it's no crazier!"
